Feldenkrais Practitioner Chava Sorani Launches At Home in Yourself, a Podcast of Short Thoughts on the Feldenkrais Method
The first two episodes are out today: how a sore back before her wedding led her to Feldenkrais, and a simple explanation of the method with a short experiment listeners can try in a chair
Chava Sorani, a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner and the founder of Feldy, today launched At Home in Yourself: Thoughts on the Feldenkrais Method®, a podcast about what changes in us when we move with attention. The first two episodes are available today on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and other podcast apps, and at feldy.me/podcast, with a new episode every two weeks.
Each episode starts from one idea, such as attention, listening or softness, and most run under fifteen minutes. Some include a small experiment that listeners can try in a chair, right where they are. Others offer a single thought to take into the day. No experience with the method is needed.
The first episode, "How a sore back led me to Feldenkrais", goes back to the weeks before Sorani's wedding, when her back hurt so much that she could hardly stand. Nothing she tried helped, until a childhood friend suggested a Feldenkrais lesson.
"When I look back at those first lessons, they had less to do with my back than I expected," Sorani says in the episode. "They had much more to do with noticing."
That experience also gave the show its name. "After a lesson, I felt at home in myself," she says. "At home in my own body. Present in it, and curious about it."
The second episode, "What is the Feldenkrais Method?", is a plain introduction for anyone who has heard the name and wondered what it means. Sorani explains who Moshe Feldenkrais (1904 to 1984) was, what Awareness Through Movement® and Functional Integration® lessons are like, and how the nervous system can learn from small differences it is able to feel.
"For me, the simplest way to say it is this," she says. "A Feldenkrais lesson is a way of learning how you move."
The episode ends with a short seated experiment: turning the head while the eyes lead the movement, then noticing what feels different.
The Feldenkrais Method is taught mostly by voice. In an Awareness Through Movement lesson, the teacher guides students with words while they move slowly and gently, often lying on the floor, so each person can attend to their own sensations. That makes audio a natural home for it, and it is also how Sorani teaches in Feldy, her online program of guided Feldenkrais lessons for practice at home.
The third episode, "Why does a Feldenkrais lesson leave us feeling so peaceful?", follows on Tuesday, November 3. Every episode has its own page on feldy.me/podcast with a full transcript, chapters, and links to related reading.
At Home in Yourself is free to listen to on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and other podcast apps. To try the lessons themselves, Feldy offers a free 7-day trial.
