Our Method
The Feldenkrais Method® of somatic education was developed by Moshe Feldenkrais — a physicist, engineer, and martial artist with a revolutionary approach to human movement. Rather than focusing on repetitive exercise, the Feldenkrais Method® teaches you to move with greater awareness, efficiency, and ease.
Through carefully designed movement sequences, you learn to notice habitual patterns that may cause pain or limitation, and discover new, more comfortable ways of moving.
Suitable for all ages and fitness levels, this approach has helped people worldwide reduce chronic pain, improve flexibility, and enhance their quality of life.
The Story of Moshe Feldenkrais
Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais (1904–1984) was a physicist, engineer, and martial artist who developed his method after suffering a severe knee injury. When faced with the prospect of surgery with uncertain outcomes, he chose instead to study anatomy, physiology, neuroscience, and human development.
Through years of self-study and exploration, he not only healed his own knee but developed a revolutionary approach to human learning and movement. He understood that the brain's capacity for change — what we now call neuroplasticity — could be harnessed through intelligent movement.
His work has since influenced fields ranging from rehabilitation and performing arts to sports training and special education.
Core Principles
The Feldenkrais Method® is built on a deep understanding of how humans learn and change.
Awareness
Learning to sense what you actually do, rather than what you think you do. Awareness is the foundation of change.
Gentle Movement
Working within comfort — never forcing or straining. Small, slow movements create the conditions for the nervous system to learn.
Neuroplasticity
The brain can reorganize itself at any age. New movement patterns create new neural pathways, leading to lasting change.
Whole-Person Integration
Movement, sensation, thought, and emotion are inseparable. Improving one aspect naturally enhances the others.
What It Helps With
People come to the Feldenkrais Method® for many reasons. Here are some of the most common benefits.
Pain Relief
- ✓Chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain
- ✓Joint stiffness and limited range of motion
- ✓Repetitive strain and postural discomfort
Mobility & Flexibility
- ✓Improved balance and coordination
- ✓Greater ease in daily activities
- ✓Enhanced athletic or artistic performance
Well-Being
- ✓Reduced stress and tension
- ✓Better sleep quality
- ✓Increased body awareness and confidence
The Science Behind It
Modern neuroscience has validated what Moshe Feldenkrais intuited decades ago: the brain is remarkably plastic throughout life. Research in neuroplasticity confirms that novel, attentive movement experiences can create new neural connections and reorganize motor patterns.
Studies have shown that the Feldenkrais Method® can reduce pain, improve balance in older adults, enhance body image, and increase overall functional mobility. Its emphasis on slow, mindful practice aligns with findings in motor learning research showing that quality of attention matters more than quantity of repetition.
The Feldenkrais Method's approach to gentle, exploratory movement also parallels principles used in pain science and rehabilitation, where safety and comfort are essential for the nervous system to recalibrate its responses.
