Is Posture Genetic? What You Inherit and What You Learn
Family resemblance in posture is real, but most of what you see is learned rather than inherited. Which parts are fixed, and which parts are still open.
In short
Posture is only partly genetic. You inherit bone proportions, joint shape, and how stretchy your connective tissue is, and those set a rough frame. How you actually hold and organise yourself inside that frame is learned habit, which is why posture keeps changing through life and stays open to change.

Some postural differences do have a medical basis, including scoliosis and inherited connective tissue conditions such as hypermobility spectrum disorder and Ehlers Danlos syndrome. If your posture changed noticeably without explanation, or if you have very lax joints alongside pain or frequent dislocations, ask a clinician for an assessment.
Is posture genetic? Partly, and the interesting part is which parts. You inherit a skeleton: the length of your thigh bones, the depth and angle of your hip sockets, the curves your spine naturally tends toward, and how stretchy your ligaments are. That frame is not negotiable. What happens inside the frame, the muscular holding and the daily habits that people actually mean when they talk about their posture, is learned. Between 20 and 40 percent of older adults develop an increased forward curve in the upper spine (Katzman et al., 2014), which tells you something important on its own: a trait that arrives decades after birth was not simply written into you at conception.
Why families look alike when they stand
Watch a family at a bus stop and you will often see the same shape three times over. It is easy to read that as genetics, and it partly is. But children learn movement by copying long before they can speak, and a family shares far more than genes. The same chairs, the same kitchen heights, the same kind of work, the same unspoken ideas about whether it is polite to take up space.
There is also a quieter route. If a parent moved carefully because something hurt, a child often picks up the carefulness without ever knowing why it was there. Habits of holding travel through households the way accents do.
What is genuinely inherited
Bone shape and proportion. Hip socket depth and angle vary a great deal between people and are set by your skeleton. This is why some people can sit cross legged comfortably and others simply cannot, no matter how much they practise.
Spinal curve tendency. The size of your natural lumbar curve has an inherited component. A deeper curve is a variation, not a fault.
Connective tissue elasticity. How stretchy your ligaments are runs in families, which is why very bendy parents often have very bendy children. At the far end of that range sit conditions such as hypermobility spectrum disorder and Ehlers Danlos syndrome, which are genuinely genetic and worth a proper assessment.
Some structural conditions. Scoliosis, a sideways curve and rotation of the spine, has heritable components. Its presence is a medical matter rather than a habit.

What is learned, and therefore still open
Almost everything else. Whether your head sits forward of your shoulders. Whether one shoulder lives higher than the other. Whether your ribs are held down and forward. Whether your pelvis tucks under when you sit. Whether your jaw is clenched while you read.
None of these are shapes you were born with. They are patterns of muscular effort your nervous system has settled on, usually for a sensible reason at some point: a growth spurt, a desk, a period of pain, a job, an emotional stretch of life. A pattern with a reason behind it is still a pattern, and patterns are learnable in both directions.
This is why I am wary of the word posture altogether. It suggests a position you should reach and then hold. Held positions are exhausting and never last past mid afternoon. What actually changes how someone stands is not a better position but a wider choice of movement, so the body stops defaulting to one arrangement all day.
How the habit layer changes

That sounds too mild to matter. In practice it is the mildness that does the work, because your nervous system will revise a pattern it can clearly sense and will defend a pattern it is being forced out of. In my work with clients, people often stand differently at the end of an hour without ever being told to stand differently.

A more useful question than nature or nurture
Asking whether posture is genetic tends to lead somewhere unhelpful, because either answer can become an excuse. If it is all genes, nothing can be done. If it is all habit, then anyone who still looks a certain way has failed at something.
The better question is narrower and kinder: what does my body currently have no choice about, and what does it simply have a strong preference for? Bone gives you no choice. Preference is where the room is, and there is usually much more of it than people expect.

Is posture genetic, or is it a habit?
Both, in different proportions. Your skeleton is inherited: limb lengths, the shape of your hip sockets, the natural curves your spine tends toward, and how elastic your ligaments are. What sits on top of that, the way you stand, sit, and carry your head through an ordinary day, is a learned pattern, and learned patterns can be relearned.
Why do I stand exactly like my mother or father?
Usually because you watched them for twenty years. Children copy movement long before they copy words, and a household shares more than DNA: the same chairs, the same work, the same ideas about how a body should look. Family resemblance in posture is real, but shared learning explains a great deal of it.
Can you change your posture if it runs in your family?
Yes, in most cases, though what changes is not the bone. You cannot alter the shape of your hip socket or the length of your spine. You can change the muscular holding layered over it, and that layer is responsible for most of what people dislike when they look in a mirror.
Which postural traits are actually inherited?
Skeletal proportion and joint shape are inherited, and so is connective tissue laxity, which is why very flexible parents often have very flexible children. Scoliosis has a heritable component too. Even then, inheritance sets a tendency rather than a verdict, and how much a tendency shows up depends heavily on use.
How long does it take to change a postural habit?
Most people feel something different inside one attentive session, though it fades quickly at first. Standing or sitting differently without having to think about it usually takes a couple of months of short, regular practice. Trying to hold a better position all day is the approach that fails most reliably, because holding is just another kind of effort.
Should I see a professional about my posture?
Worth doing if your posture changed noticeably over months without an obvious reason, if you have back pain that keeps building, or if you have very lax joints together with pain or joints that slip out. Movement education of this kind sits alongside that clinical assessment rather than standing in for it.
