Awareness of body position is the sense that lets you know where every part of you is without checking with your eyes. Touch your nose with your eyes closed and your finger arrives. Under a blanket, you know your knee is bent before you move it. On a dark staircase, your foot finds the last step. Where awareness of body position comes from
The information arrives from many small sensors at once. Receptors woven into your muscles report how long or short each muscle is at this moment, and how fast that is changing. Why the felt picture can grow vague
The picture is redrawn constantly, and it is drawn from whatever signals arrive. Fewer signals, fainter picture. A few ordinary situations thin the flow. Long hours held in one position send very little news, because the sensors respond to change more than to stillness. Pain crowds the channel, so a sore area often feels blurry as well as tender. A part you have mostly stopped moving, a shoulder you have been protecting for months, sends less and less detail. A plaster cast is the extreme case: after weeks of stillness, the freed limb can feel oddly foreign. And some regions are simply unexplored, because nothing ever asked you to feel them. Is it safe, and who should take care?
Simply paying attention to where your body is carries very little risk.
