What efficiency of movement looks like in daily life
The clearest way to understand efficiency is to watch its opposite, and the opposite is everywhere, in all of us. Reach for something on a high shelf and there is a fair chance you hold your breath on the way up. The breath has no role in the reach, yet it stops anyway, as if the lungs had been signed up for a job that belongs to the arm and the ribs.
Or turn your head to check behind you. Many people raise their shoulders at the same moment, though the shoulders add nothing to the turn and can even make it harder. Sit down to write and the jaw may quietly clamp shut. Stand up from a chair and the whole body can join in, hands pressing, neck stiffening, breath held, when the task itself asks only for a shift of weight forward and a lengthening of the legs.
None of these habits matters much in a single moment. The cost arrives through repetition. A held jaw for one sentence is nothing. A held jaw through a working day is a tired face and often a tight neck by evening. Effort a task does not need never simply disappears. It settles somewhere, and you feel it later without knowing where it came from.
Extra effort is a habit, not a weakness
It is tempting to read all this surplus effort as a personal flaw, as if you were simply built tense. The more accurate story is kinder. Somewhere along the way, each of these patterns was learned. Perhaps bracing the shoulders began during a stressful year. Perhaps holding the breath started around an old injury, when moving carefully felt safer. The nervous system kept the pattern long after the reason faded, because keeping patterns is exactly what nervous systems do.
That is genuinely good news. A pattern that was learned can be updated. Nothing has to be strengthened first, and nothing is broken. What is needed is information: a clear feel for what you are actually doing, so that a lighter way of doing it becomes available.
