Talk to a doctor if you bruise easily, have stretchy or fragile skin, have widespread joint pain or frequent dislocations, or if several family members share these traits, since those combinations warrant assessment for a connective tissue condition such as Ehlers Danlos syndrome. Any ankle you cannot weight bear on after a roll needs urgent assessment.
Double jointed ankles are not a medical term, but most people who use the phrase mean something specific: an ankle that bends further than other people's, that rolls outward easily, and that feels vaguely untrustworthy on a kerb or a stony path. The everyday name for that is a loose or lax ankle. The underlying reason is usually that your ligaments are a little more elastic than average.
This is common enough to be unremarkable. Among university students in one published cohort, roughly 12.5% cleared a strict threshold for generalised joint hypermobility (PeerJ, 2019). Being bendy is a variation, not a diagnosis, and for many people it never causes a single problem.
Signs you have double jointed ankles
The ankle rolls easily and often. Repeated small rolls on flat pavement, kerbs and gentle slopes are the most reliable sign. Most people roll an ankle occasionally. Some ankles do it monthly.
You can point the foot unusually far. Extra range into pointing, or a foot that can turn inward much further than a friend's, suggests ligaments with more give.
Uneven ground feels unreliable. Grass, gravel, sand and dark stairs all feel harder than they should, and you find yourself watching your feet.
Standing still aches more than walking. Loose joints rely on muscle rather than ligament to stay put, and muscles tire. Queuing hurts more than a walk, which sounds backwards but is very typical.

The thing worth understanding is that ligaments are not just straps. They are dense with nerve endings, and a fair amount of what you know about where your foot is comes from the tension in them. A ligament with more give sends a weaker and later signal.
That is the real cost of a loose ankle, and it is not weakness. You get less warning. By the time the ankle tells your nervous system that it has started to roll, it has already rolled further than a tighter ankle would have. What helps a loose ankle
Stop stretching it. This is the single most useful change for most bendy ankles, and it is also the hardest to accept, because stretching feels productive and the extra range is easy to reach. Nothing about a loose ankle improves with more give.
Then build the sensing. Barefoot weight shifting while standing still, slow rises onto the toes and back down, standing on one leg near a kitchen counter, and walking deliberately over slightly uneven ground all teach the ankle to report earlier and the muscles to answer sooner. Footwear matters more than it does for other people. A shoe with a firm heel counter and a sole that does not twist easily gives an unstable ankle something to work against. Save the soft flexible shoes for flat, predictable ground.
A word on the rest. Clinical care sits alongside all of this and nothing here replaces it: a physiotherapist can grade the strengthening properly, and repeated giving way or widespread joint pain deserves a medical opinion. Yoga and Pilates operate by a different mechanism again, through held shapes and controlled repetition, and Pilates in particular suits many hypermobile people well, provided the teacher understands that the goal is control rather than depth. A physiotherapist prescribes graded strengthening and balance work, often with bands and single leg drills, and that has a good evidence base for unstable ankles.
