Joints Stiff in Morning? A Gentle Whole Body Routine
A short in bed routine that visits your fingers, feet, knees, hips, shoulders and neck one at a time, plus why joints feel stiff after a night of lying still.
Before you begin. General movement guidance, not medical advice. Morning stiffness that lasts longer than about 30 to 60 minutes, affects many joints at once, or comes with swelling, warmth or redness may point to inflammatory arthritis, for example rheumatoid arthritis, so it deserves a doctor's visit. Keep every movement inside comfort, and stop if pain turns sharp.
The lesson
About 5 to 7 minutes. Move slowly, do less than you can, and stay well below any pain. Rest whenever you need to.

Feldy voices gentle lessons like this for stiffness after 60, so you can close your eyes and follow along.
- 1
Settling. Lie on your back with your legs long. Notice where your body meets the bed.
- 2
Fingers and wrists. Slowly curl and spread your fingers, then turn your wrists a little each way. Stop and rest your hands. Which hand feels easier?
- 3
Feet and ankles. Bring one foot up toward you, then away, very slowly. Make it small. Rest, then do the other foot.
- 4
Knees leaning. Bend your knees and stand your feet. Let both knees lean slowly to one side and back, then the other. Rest in the middle.
- 5
Shoulders. Slide one shoulder a little toward your ear and let it come back. Then the other. Rest, and make it smaller if it feels tight.
- 6
Turning the head. Turn your head slowly to one side, then the other. Stop in the middle. You can also just imagine the turn.
- 7
Scanning. Rest and sense from your feet up to your head. What feels different from when you began?

If your joints are stiff in the morning, you can start moving them before you ever stand up. The short routine above uses the Feldenkrais Method® and visits your hands, feet, knees, shoulders and neck, one at a time, while the bed carries your weight. Go slowly, stay small, and rest between the steps.
It helps to have a calm voice to follow. A free trial of Feldy gives you guided lessons you can play in bed before your feet touch the floor.
Why joints feel stiff in the morning
Joints are the places where bones meet. Each one has a little fluid inside that helps the surfaces slide. When you lie still for seven or eight hours, that fluid is not being moved around, and it can feel thicker, almost like gel. Your muscles have also held a few sleeping shapes, and your body is at its coolest in the early hours.
None of this means something is wrong. It means you were still. For most people, a few minutes of easy movement is enough to start the day feeling smoother.
Joint stiffness is also very common. In 2019, around 528 million people worldwide lived with osteoarthritis (WHO, 2023). Many more people have stiff mornings without any diagnosis at all.
When to try this routine
Try it on mornings when your body feels slow to start. Do it in bed, or sitting on the edge of the bed with your feet on the floor if lying down is not comfortable. Go at the pace of a sleepy cat, and let each step be much smaller than you think you need.
This is the whole body version
This page gives you one short visit to every area. If one place is the loudest, there is a routine for it. Try the one for stiff hands in the morning or the one for stiff feet in the morning. Our Feldypedia article on osteoarthritis and joint discomfort explains more about everyday joint discomfort. The Feldy program for stiffness after 60 puts these small lessons into a weekly rhythm.
Who should skip this routine, and when to see a doctor
Please leave the routine out and check in with a doctor first if a joint is swollen, hot or red, or if the stiffness began after a fall.
Morning stiffness that lasts longer than about 30 to 60 minutes is worth raising too, especially if it affects many joints at once or comes with swelling or warmth. That pattern may point to an inflammatory arthritis, for example rheumatoid arthritis. It needs a proper assessment. This routine can sit alongside the care you receive, and it does not replace it.

Common Questions about joints stiff in morning (FAQ)
Why are my joints stiff in the morning?
Mostly because you were still for hours. Joints like movement, and the thick fluid inside them can feel like it has gelled after a night without much of it. Your tissues are also cooler in the early hours. For most people the stiffness eases once they start moving about.
How long should stiff joints in the morning last?
Stiffness from lying still usually fades in about fifteen to thirty minutes of ordinary moving. If it regularly lasts longer than 30 to 60 minutes, or shows up in many joints at once, tell your doctor. That pattern can point to an inflammatory cause rather than simple stillness.
Is it safe to do this routine if my joints hurt?
The movements are small and slow, and you can make them smaller or only imagine them. Skip any movement that sharpens pain. Leave the routine out and see a doctor first if a joint is swollen, hot, red or newly painful, or if stiffness began after a fall.
How often should I do a joints routine in the morning?
Once each morning is plenty, before you get out of bed. Five minutes is enough, and on a rushed day a few of the steps still count. Showing up most days counts for more than long sessions.
How long until I notice my joints are less stiff?
Some people sense an easier first few minutes on day one, because they moved before standing. Changes in how the whole morning goes tend to take a few weeks of regular practice, and they vary from person to person. If nothing shifts after about six weeks, mention it to your doctor.
How does this differ from a stretching routine?
Stretching usually aims to pull a muscle to its limit. This routine asks for small, slow movement while you notice what happens, so there is no end point to reach. The Feldenkrais Method® works this way: attention and ease first, range second.
What should I avoid when my joints are stiff in the morning?
Avoid jumping straight out of bed onto your feet. Avoid forcing any joint toward its limit while it is still cool, and avoid holding your breath as you move. Also avoid deciding to move less all day because the morning felt stiff, since long stillness is part of what causes it.
When should I see a professional about morning joint stiffness?
See a doctor if stiffness lasts longer than about 30 to 60 minutes most mornings, affects many joints, or comes with swelling, warmth, redness, fever or deep tiredness. Also go if it is slowly getting worse. These signs need a proper assessment, which no movement routine can give.
