What evidence based actually means

A practice is called evidence based when fair tests support it. The fairest test is a randomized controlled trial. People are split into groups by chance, one group gets the practice, the other gets something else, and researchers compare the results.

Risk of bias is the chance that flaws in a study make its results look better or worse than the truth. Small groups, people knowing which group they are in, and dropouts that go uncounted can all tilt a result. High risk of bias does not mean a study lied. It means we should hold its findings loosely.

What the research on Feldenkrais shows so far

The most useful summary is a systematic review, which is a study that gathers every trial on one question and weighs them together. In 2015, researchers pooled 20 randomized controlled trials of the method this way. Their verdict: promising evidence for improving functions like balance, a high risk of bias across the trials, and not a single adverse event reported (Hillier & Worley, 2015).

Both halves of that sentence matter. Promising means the results leaned in a helpful direction, particularly for balance in older adults. High risk of bias means the trials were often small and imperfect, so the findings need confirmation from larger, stricter studies.

What the evidence does not show

No study shows that Feldenkrais treats, cures or heals any condition. Trial results are group averages, so a promising average still includes people who felt no change. And the review above is a decade old, with newer trials still arriving in small numbers. Anyone who tells you the question is settled, in either direction, is ahead of the data.

Why gentle movement is hard to study

There is a fair reason the evidence is thin, and it applies to most movement practices. You cannot hide a movement lesson from the person doing it, so the blinding that drug trials rely on is impossible. There is no obvious placebo for lying on the floor and paying attention. Lessons also vary from teacher to teacher, and awareness itself is hard to put a number on. Add modest funding, and you get many small trials instead of a few large ones.

Where evidence based Feldenkrais practice honestly fits

Clinical care sits in its own category. A doctor gives you a diagnosis, and a physiotherapist gives you assessment and a graded plan, both backed by their own research traditions. Feldenkrais lessons work alongside that care, not in place of it. If you already see a physiotherapist, the lessons simply sit beside that work.

Movement methods are a different category, and each comes at the body through a different mechanism. Yoga works through postures and breath. Pilates works through control and repetition. Tai Chi works through slow, continuous weight shifting. Feldenkrais works through attention to sensation during small, easy movements. Yoga and Tai Chi carry larger research bases simply because more trials have been run on them, which says more about research volume than about any final ranking. Who should pick what
